H.264 iFrame 50MB/s
MJPEG 100% quality

Video quality is not just about the frame size: compression, color depth and frame rate all play a critical role on the overall picture.

Ultrakam pushes your smartphone’s hardware to the limit by using innovative techniques that allows you to capture video at 2K resolution in two formats used by professionals in the field: H.264 iFrame and MJPEG.

iFrame’s H.264 is considered one of the most advanced compression codecs available today, it provides similar and sometimes superior quality than MJPEG with slightly better file sizes. This format is also supported by Apple’s hardware, allowing delivery at maximum capture resolution of 2240x1672 pixels rendering at a remarkable data rate of 3GB per minute.

However if you preference is with the well known MJPEG codec, you'll be able to switch to it in a single touch allowing you to record at 1936x1446 resolution.

In both modes you can adjust the quality in a 60% to 100% range.

During the H.264 mode the status bar will show the expected average bitrate being 50MB/s at 100% quality. By choosing the minimum 60% the system will disable the iFrame mode, in case you need to maximize HD space over quality.

The color is sampled by using the 4:2:0 Full Range the maximum allowance supported in the current iOS version.

For Live Action both encoders supports either20,24, and 30fps. Ultrakam delivers stable framerates, it also constantly scans for possible drop frames and will notify you in case of an unexpected drop, mainly due to background tasks running in the device.

Film, Timelapse & Slow Motion

q

Unleash your talent and creativity by creating high quality timelapses and slow-motion videos at different speeds and frame rates.

For Timelapses you can do custom configurations of per second intervals, then simply select playback speed. Ultrakam will take these photos at a massive resolution up to 140% larger than HD, once the recording stops it will create the corresponding video.

In Slow Motion mode you can capture at 120fps in the iPhone5S or 60fps in the iPhone5. From the settings menu select speed conversion allowing up to 10x Slow Motion effect by selecting the 12fps preset.

Remote Controls

Advanced controls equal to those found in professional equipment.

Receive the camera’s feed right into your iPhone and more!

Ultrakam’s groundbreaking technology is not just about it’s amazing recording capabilities.

Bluetooth, Wifi and HDMI integration creates a never before seen production experience.

Utrakam RC (Remote Control) is a companion app that will allows you to control all the functionality of your camera via Bluetooth up to a distance of 6 m. or 19 feet. Having a Remote Control is extremely powerful, not only can you start/stop your recordings at any given time, but you can also adjust the focus and exposure areas with it. Even more outstanding is the ability to stream the camera’s live feed to control the quality of your recordings: Real Time, Medium and High; each mode offers a balance between frame rate and photo quality.

Utrakam Web Server (Built in the camera) enables you to access all of your recordings in the camera app wirelessly. Just share the same WiFi spot, enter the gallery module to check the IP address of the device, enter this IP address in your preferred web browser (computer shares same WiFi spot), this gives you access to the camera’s web based gallery. In addition you will have basic remote control capabilities, like start/stop your recording from the web panel.

Utrakam HDMI and Airplay (Built in the camera) support allows you to easily stream the camera’s live feed into any professional monitoring equipment, all of this in real time. Enable Airplay mode in Ultrakam with the “Mirror” option turned on, the camera will immediately send the display to the connected output. If you prefer higher quality all you have to do is connect to Apple’s “Digital AV adapter” this will allow you to connect directly from Ultrakam to any HDMI output.

Internal Gallery and Player

Play, scrub, extract photos, do Color correction, share, delete, and even create Proxy versions from your videos, all this power in your hand.

Ultrakam's Gallery genuinely challenges the preview functionalities of any professional camera. Not only does it keep a list of all of your recordings, but it also takes advantage of Apple’s hardware to offer smooth playback, with real time scrubbing through your videos, in the case of eXtreme Quality recordings it will allow you to create a proxy version maximizing your preview experience.

Designed with ease of functionality in mind, it will also allow you to export a proxy version to your iPhone’s photo library in case you want to send a quick preview via email, or if you prefer you can extract a single high quality frame and save it as a picture in your camera roll.

The possibilities don’t stop there! If you also have the Cinekolor app installed, send a still frame to this amazing color correction application and start working on the look you want for your videos, Cinekolor will export those as 3D LUTs that can be opened in any well known photo or video editing software.

Easy Presets

Switch from Web to 2K eXtreme Quality in a single touch.

Ultrakam's presets are designed to quickly fit your needs. With a single touch you can go from 2K film resolution, to Web or record at even smaller resolutions to maximize the space saving capabilities of the codecs.

FAQ

Compatibility

Does Ultrakam work on other devices than iPhone 5S?

Yes!. But the only device capable of fully capturing 2K resolution is the iPhone 5S. However it will work well on iPhone 5 mostly HD mode and 2K at 20fps. Also it requires iOS 7+

Does Ultrakam works on iPhone 5C?

Ultrakam should perform in the 5C as it does in the iPhone 5. However the recommended devices for now are iPhone 5 and 5S.

Does Ultrakam works on iPhone 4S?

2K Is not available in the 4S due to hardware limitations. You'll be able to record HD video and timelapses but not slow motion. We don't recommend this device at this moment.

What are the devices supporting the Bluetooth Ultrakam Remote?

You can run the Remove Version 1.x in any iOS device with iOS7+ with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) support. We've tested iPhone4S+ devices.

Common Problems (Crashes, Audio Sync, Choppy Playback)

The app crashes after X seconds...

If the app goes to a completely black screen after X seconds, then it's the auto sleep function in your phone. Go to settings and disable the auto sleep function.

I cannot play the videos in my Desktop(or in the phone) those are choppy...

As any pro knows "RAW" video streams are not meant to be playable but to keep large amounts of data. That's why we included the render proxy function inside the app's video player (lower left corner). So you can create a proxy in Ultrakam and then copy it back to your desktop; or you can Drag the files into your editing suite and render it using a realtime playback codec. If you don't need 2K Raw quality try the "med" or "web" preset.

I cannot play the video on my desktop...

Videos are playable using the latest Quicktime and VLC. If the video is not playable it's more likely the file is corrupted. Check that you actually transferred the whole file by checking the filesize in Ultrakam's gallery and the filesize in your Desktop. Also make sure that your transfer are not being canceled due to your phone entering in auto sleep; Ultrakam needs to be open and up front while transferring via WiFi.

Audio is out of sync...

Ultrakam records the audio stream separately from video, this means that you'll need to adjust the sync on your preferred editing software. Having high quality audio in a separate file is the standar procedures in professional productions. However Ultrakam creates "preview" compositions for playback, proxy rendering and library export thus the audio sync should be used only as a reference. Read more in the Audio section.

Black Screen & Energy Saving

I cannot transfer files, my screen goes black after a while...

Please go to settings and disable the auto turn off feature.

I cannot record timelapse, my screen goes black after a while...

Please go to settings and disable the auto turn off feature.

I cannot transfer files, my screen goes black after a while...

Please go to settings and disable the auto turn off feature.

Exporting video and photos

Can I export video to the Photo Library?

Yes you can, just hit the export icon next to the play icon in the gallery. Keep in mind that it's just a preview, so the max size will be 640z640 and audio sync just as reference.

Can I export a photo to the Photo Library?

Yes you can, during playback just hit the left icon with the camera button to capture the current frame. Then you'll have the option of exporting to Photo Library or Cinekolor.

What is the recommended video player?

Codecs are MJPEG and H.264. In our testing quicktime and VLC were able to reprodcue the files with no problem. Just keep in mind that 2K video could be hard to play on your device. Consider creating proxies in the Ultrakam's player and transfer does also to your desktop to improve your experience. Once you have proxies you can even play those using the WiFi web based control panel

Drop Frames Alert

Why the app is showing a drop frames alert after recording?

Ultrakam is the only app that constantly monitors the REAL recording speed to ensure a professional recording quality. The drop frames alert will show if at any given moment the capturing frame rate has a variation greater than 5%. The reason this could happen is due to background processes forcing to enqueue the high speed write operations of the 2K video. The recommended solutions is to restart the phone and to enable Airplane mode, in order to prevent any other background task to interrupt the intensive 2K video recording. Optionally you can turn off audio recording (if it's not needed) to maximize the video bandwidth.

Audio

Does Ultrakam record audio?

Only in "Film" mode. You can turn audio recording on and off in the settings panel. Audio is recorded separately as a High Quality .CAF file using the Stereo Linear-PCM compression at 44.1Khz delivering quality similar to CD.

Why is the audio out of sync?

Ultrakam records the audio stream separately from video, this means that you'll need to adjust the sync on your preferred editing software. Having high quality audio in a separate file is the standar procedures in professional productions. However Ultrakam creates "preview" compositions for playback, proxy rendering and library export thus the audio sync should be used only as a reference.

Why is audio recorded separately?

Both recording streams are taken in separate manner to take the maximum quality from the hardware.

Why when I play a video on the app it has audio, but when I download the file it's gone?

Audio is always recorded in a separate .CAF file however the built in player creates a temporary composition muxing audio and video. Also if you create a proxy, the resulting movie will contain both streams. Please keep in mind that this is just a preview and that audio sync is just for reference.

File management

What is the average file size?

When recording at eXtreme Quality, video data rate is about 3GB per minute. This means around 9 minutes taking all the free space in a 32GB device. However you can use the Web preset to maximize file size up to 30 minutes in a 32GB device.

How can I transfer my recordings?

There are 3 options:.

iExplorer: iExplorer desktop app from "macropant" is the best option. Just install it for free , connect your device, browse to the ultrakam's folder, and then in the documents folder you'll find all your recordings. You can access them just as another external memory meaning that also you can easely remove them, be careful. (Tip: If you have refresh problems, try creating a temp folder inside to force the app to refresh).

iTunes File Sharing: Connect your device to iTunes, then go to the "Applications" tab, at the bottom you'll find the iTunes File Sharing list, from there select Ultrakam and copy your files to your computer.

WifI: Using the app's webserver. You'll need to have your iOS device and your Laptop connected into the same local WiFi network. Then open the gallery in the phone and take note of the IP address on the upper left corner, you'll need to enter this IP address in your laptop's prefered browser.

How can I remove all recordings?

We recommend using iExplorer from "macropant" it allows you to acces to Ultrakam's documents folder just as any other regular memory. Just be careful.

What happens if I remove the app?

Put special attention before unistalling the app, you'll loose any recordings inside it!.

Remote Control

Why I cannot see the live camera feed in the Bluetooth remote?

The Bluetooth remote V1 doesn't supports live streaming, this will be available in the V2 update on late April 2014.

What are the control options by using the web based control panel?

The web based control panel offers limited control only to start/stop recording. Also make sure to close all other apps since by having WiFi enable background tasks could start running and cause a drop frames alert when recording at the highest quality. We strongly recommend to use the Remote Bluetooth Control for a better experience.

HDMI, Airplay and Remote Control Live Monitoring (V2)

Why I cannot use the HDMI, Airplay or live monitoring?

Those functions are only available on Ultrakam v2 and Ultrakam Remote v2. This will be a free update to current users and will be available on late April 2014.
